Inner Altar

just beyond
the edge
of words;

the cleverness,

the clinging personas;

there lives a bird
in a woodland hollow…

her song

scatters stars in the
forest of your crown,

stitches the roots
of your devotion
back into the
hemline of your skirts,

anoints the fractures,
the broken, the infirm

she fills your cup of wanting
with her warm honey-wine

her wings give shelter
to all who seek and find her
hiding in plain sight

her eyes glisten,
her feathers rustle,
her body is radiant;

she sings her intoxicating serenade
in every tongue,
that it may be gentled into every ear,

as it wafts through the moonlit sky
between the blades of grass
beneath the dark and silent depths of the ocean...

you have been listening

kissing her feet
in a thousand ways;

only to find
that you have never left
the inner altar
of your own
